The Working Group for Reconstructive
Urology within the Scandinavian Association of Urology:
The idea of forming
a working group for reconstructive urology was born at a visit to the pub "The
George" at The Great Queen Street in London, May 15, 1997. The beer-drinkers
were August Bakke, Wiking Månsson and Alexander Schultz (please, see photo),
who were in London because of the Reconstructive Urology Symposium, arranged by
Anthony Mundy.
The idea was supported by the Scandinavian Association
of Urology and, like the other working groups, it has representatives from each
country; Klaus Møller and Kenneth Steven from Denmark, Kari Tuhkanen and
Veli-Matti Puolakka from Finland, August Bakke and Alexander Schultz from Norway,
Olof Jonsson and Wiking Månsson (presently chairman of the group) from Sweden
and Eirikur Jonsson from Iceland. The group has met twice yearly. This has
been possible through economic support by AstraTech and Astra of the respective
countries. A survey has been conducted regarding the quantity of different
reconstructive urological procedures in the Scandinavian countries. The result
of the study has been presented at the national meetings, and is in press in the
Scandinavian Journal of Urology and Nephrology. Quite interesting, and surprising,
differences were found between the countries. The group is now working with
plans for prospective, randomized trials regarding reconstructive procedures,
such as functional results after different types of orthotopic neobladders, the
impact on renal function of refluxing and antirefluxing ureterointestinal anastomosis,
different techniques for surgical treatment of Peyronie´s disease, etc.
